R.I.P. Tramp

We keep losing the originators. One of the artists that helped define what D&D is has passed away.  +Charles Akins has confirmed the death of Dave Trampier.  It is very unfortunate, as he was about to re-enter the hobby after years away from it.

City State Kickstarter and Shaking Off the Plague

You may have noticed that I blogged not one thing last week.  Not even a Hump-day Hildebrandt post.  I was sick in a terrible way last week.  I only went to work on Monday and was laid up until Saturday night.  The combination of meds I was given made for some interesting hallucinations though. Anyhoo... I couldn't bring myself to sit up and type or work, but I did get in two full seasons of the "X-files" (which may or may not have contributed to the hallucinations.)   Anyway, I'm up and running again.  This weekend I will be running my "once a month" game at Warriors 3 Comics & Games in Wayne.  I'm very excited about that.   We should be able to get the characters through the "intro to old school" adventure and in to Saltmarsh to begin the "U" series this week!  I also think that I'll be able to get my normal Friday C&C game in the Lost Lands going again this week, so I have lots of gaming goodness happening here.

Late this week or early next week I promise that you will see that "I Give A Fluff" piece that I promised.  Illness postponed that one a bit.

By the way, you probably already know but Judges Guild has launched a Kickstarter to reprint City State of the Invincible Overlord!  Go ahead, click it and pledge.  I did.  I'm in for a hardcover when it's all done.  Did I mention that the maps are being redone by +Rob Conley?  Pretty awesome.  You'll notice in that picture that it says "Pathfinder compatible" but also says "Universal Fantasy Supplement."  I was curious so I went to the source and asked what was up.  Well, this baby's coming in two flavors, kind of like a Frog God product.  You can get it in Original Recipe or Extra Crunchy.  That is to say, you can get it with the original stats that were in it when it first came out (for the OSR folks) or you can buy it stated up for Pathfinder.  The choice will be given once it funds.

Well, that's all folks.

Good night, Wesley.  Sleep well.  I'll most likely kill you in the morning.

Movie Night... Mazes & Monsters

Sorry folks, I've caught something fierce.  I tried to get some of my new fluff piece done, but I'm working at a snails pace with how I feel.  So, instead, let's watch Mazes & Monsters.

Hump-day Hildebrandt; Wherein I Start to Give a Fluff.

In today's post I'm giving you three for the price of one (which is actually free unless you're buying stuff through the links on the blog.)  I give you two elf based paintings by the Hildebrandt Brothers and I kick off a new segment that I will occasionally post here called "I Give A Fluff."  The gist of the new post will be a topic upon which I give "fluff" ideas for you to riff off of in your own campaigns.

I've decided to kick off "I Give A Fluff..." with a bit on elves.  I think that it is safe to say that much of what we see early on in the RPG scene about elves is derived from Tolkien (and possibly a bit of Moorcock)  more than from myth and folklore.   Those "in the know" will likely realize that due to this fact, much of my fluff on elves will be derived from Tolkien and pre-y2k D&D.   I intend to have the first post up tomorrow with "I Give A Fluff About Elves. Enjoy!

Also, don't be alarmed if there are healthy Led Zeppelin references in there...

40 Years On... But 6 Years Gone...

"I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else." - E. Gary Gygax

When you wrote Chainmail, did you have any inkling of how much that first act would change the world?

Did you ever stop and wonder how many lives you might impact?

How many minds you would help to shape?

Did you realize how many people you would bestow freedom upon by teaching them to continue to use their imaginations?

Did you know how many worlds you would help to create through you're inspiration?

Did you stop to think about how many people you would give strength to, where they had none before?

Did you know the voice that you would give to generations to come?

Did you know that you would be a hero to them?

Did you realize the "celebrity" you would give to your own children?  How many people would seek them out because of the great gifts that you gave to the world?

I don't think so.  Because you were like us.  You wanted to play some games, tell some stories and have some fun.  In the process, you taught us to do the same.
Thank You.
Roll In Peace, Mr. Gygax, and remember what you always taught us.

Fight On!
